So Others Might Eat Commencing Construction of Karin House for Seniors at The Parks

WASHINGTON, DC, MAY 4, 2020 — The Parks team is excited to announce that non-profit developer So Others Might Eat (SOME) will be commencing construction of Karin House, their 40-unit affordable seniors’ community the first week of May. As many of you know, the District selected SOME during the initial planning for The Parks as one of the non-profits to develop an existing building: historic building 17, immediately east of DCI School. SOME is partnering with Hamel Construction to manage this major renovation including all new interiors and systems. Historic elements of the masonry, stucco, cornice and exterior doors will be preserved and restored.

Upon completion, the building will house 40 efficiency units for seniors and one staff unit as well as service and amenity space including a large community room which provides space for programming, socializing, exercising, computers, and support services. Outdoor space will include an accessible courtyard to provide recreational outdoor space for the residents as well as landscaping that will include stormwater retention and native plantings.Construction is scheduled to start the first week of May and will continue through summer 2021.  Hours of construction will follow the regulations 7am – 7pm. The construction traffic will come through the main gate on Georgia Avenue through Main Drive. SOME will collaborate with neighbors to make sure the impact is minimal during the course of construction.

If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to reach out to SOME’s Chief Housing Development Officer, Julia Moran Morton at JMoranMorton@SOME.org.
